The availability of satellite Earth observation data will rapidly increase in the coming years, with for example the launch of the European Copernicus Sentinel satellites. These data constitute an unprecedented source of information for (Earth) scientists and societal users, covering fields like water, land (sub)surface, solid Earth, ice, atmosphere, climate, environment, ecology and more. Many existing and future Earth observation applications are rooted in scientific research, as for example funded by the NWO User Support Program Space Research (GO program).

The symposium will bring together scientists and users from society, industry and government. It will address the need for satellite Earth observation data and the increasing possibilities of its applications. Some of the recent progress in relevant scientific research will be presented and the symposium aims at gathering input for setting up a user-driven Earth observation research agenda for the coming years.

Themes

In order to focus on matching ‘needs’ and ‘knowledge’, the symposium will be organised around the intersection of three scientific and three societal themes:

Program

* Plenary sessions: information on Earth Observation programs and data; invited speakers from the scientific, value adding and user communities will address the ‘needs’ and ‘knowledge’ on three coupled science-society themes.

* Science session (oral and posters): especially PhD students and Postdocs in the relevant fields are invited to submit their abstracts for posters and (a limited number of) oral presentations. Abstracts have to be submitted using the format that can be downloaded from the EO3S website.

* Round table: workshops on the three societal themes are organised in the afternoon to solicit needs and possibilities for future Earth observation research.

* Panel: The symposium and workshops  will be closed with a plenary panel discussion.

Who?

The symposium is useful for a broad audience. Specifically invited are:

-          scientists in the field of satellite Earth observation research,

-          scientists in earth sciences, agriculture and food security, soil and land degradation, urban planning, transport,

-          representatives of the Earth observation value adding industry and service providers,

-          users from government organisations,

-          other users from society and industry.
